Keyboard Navigation with Assistive Technology

Section titled “Summary”Keyboard navigation is helpful for many people who cannot use a mouse. This includes people who use screen readers. Screen reader users primarily include people who are blind. Others who may use screen readers include people with:
- low or limited vision;
- cognitive and learning disabilities; and
- people with motor disabilities.
These individuals must have full keyboard access to all web page functionality, as they can’t use a mouse to scroll and click what they need.
Screen readers not only read content to their users, but they also make navigation easier. Screen readers provide many ways to navigate a page. Tools like custom shortcuts aid standard keyboard navigation. These tools let users jump directly to needed content. Well-organized pages are essential. Landmarks, headings, and labels are also needed. With accessible content, screen readers can empower their users.
